Amazon.com Review

First published in 1986 and in print--and immensely popular--ever since, Open Mind, Open Heart, by the Trappist Monk Thomas Keating, remains one of the best introductions to a specifically Christian form of meditation. Father Keating gives the reader an overview of what contemplative prayer both is and isn't; he discusses the history of contemplative prayer in the Christian tradition and then explores step by step the process of Centering Prayer, briefly exploring its origins in the ancient church and then demonstrating its use as "a sign of one's intention" to surrender to God. Each chapter concludes with questions and answers that provide useful information in an informal context. Here in particular we get a sense of Keating's clarity--and his sense of humor. For example, in response to a question about the sudden experience of happiness in prayer, Keating responds, "You should not take prayer too seriously. There is something playful about God. You only have to look at a penguin ... to realize that He likes to play little jokes on creatures." --Doug Thorpe

AFTER THE CLOUD OF UNKNOWING, I CONSIDER THIS THE MOST IMPORTANT BOOK OF CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER. THE BOOK IS VERY EXPLANATORY, MORE DETAILED THAN ANY OTHER THAT I HAVE COME ACROSS, THE QUESTION AND ANSWER SESSIONS AT THE END OF THE CHAPTERS CAN ANSWER MOST OF THE QUESTIONS THAT ONE CAN COME ACROSS WHEN BEGINNING CENTERING PRAYER.I WOULD RECOMMEND READING THIS BOOK TOGETHER WITH THE CLOUD OF UNKNOWING AND TWO OTHER BOOKS THAT COMPLEMENT IT: "THE LIVING SEARCH OF GOD" BY WILLIAM A. MENINGER AND THE MYSTICISM OF THE CLOUD OF UNKNOWING BY WILLIAM JOHNSTON (WITH FOREWARD BY THOMAS MERTON).CONTEMPLATION (CENTERING PRAYER) IS MORE THAN A METHOD, IT IS REALLY NOT EVEN A METHOD, BUT IT CAN LEAD TO UNION WITH GOD.

Much is written and said today about mindfulness and meditation. For those who are following these paths to a deeper prayer life , a deeper relationship with God or to learn about "Centering Paryer" this book is a wonderful starting point. It is a meditative read not a book to hurry through. Some may find it a bit deep theologically. For those who are determined to follow this path, this book is a must.

A true masterwork of modern spirituality. Keating has a heart as big as they sky, and he presents one of the most radically simple, yet amazingly effective practices for meditation that I have come across. I highly recommned this book to not only Christians but anyone who is drawn to the world of the spirit. Keating provides an amazing lucid and simple method for transcending the "self" and entering the world of the spirit.

Of the numerous books I have read regarding the contemplative life, this is absolutely the one "must have" guide. Mr. Thomas Keating lives what he teaches, and is the foremost expert in our era of this tradition, in my opinion. Faithful practice of the techniques offered in this book will convey one's relationship with our beloved, most holy and beautiful Lord God Almighty from off of the pages of His holy Word, into the depths of one's heart, where He lives.

One reading won't be enough: This is a bedside reference book for me, and it teaches me something new every time I pick it up. I will admit I initially had trouble getting into the rhythm of Father Keating's writing, but that was gone within pages. If you feel you're doing it wrong — whether you call this practice centering, meditation or something else — Father Keating will ease your mind. His book answered so many of my questions (some of which I didn't even know I had) and made Centering Prayer accessible.

Great introduction to Centering Prayer, with lots of background and extension material. If you want to get right to the method, skip the history and begin right at chapter 4. Basil Pennington also has written nice Centering Prayer books which you may prefer, try them also.

I have read a number of books on meditation from east to west, ancient to modern, and I must say that the teaching presented in this book is nearly an overlooked and lost key. I have also had the good fortune to practice a number of meditation techniques, and still I say that this teaching helps to bring it all together in a profound way. I really appreciate his appreciation and humility in seeing the value of other spiritual practices, and does not see them as a threat to "Christian" spirituality. This is touching in a day and age where so many are forgetting the universality of the human condition. The "method" of Centering Prayer and Contemplation is a true invitation towards that perenial evolution of the soul towards, "Be still, and know." If anyone reads this book, there is almost no doubt that there is something that they will learn from it if they are willing to put in the consistent effort of practice. Of course, there are other elements to "meditation" from yogic or buddhist perspectives that would be helpful to those pursuing this path. For that I would recomend the Diamond Sutra, the Miracle of Mindfulness, the Zen Teaching of Huang Po, the Way of a Pilgrim(and/or the Philokalia), Practicing the Presence(Brother Lawrence), and Aligned Relaxed Resilient(the Physical Foundations of Mindfulness). I can't stress how helpful these books can be to those of us who are open minded and open hearted and following the path of surrender to the divine. Thomas Keating is a great guide towards the gentle caress of the Holy Spirit. Even if it's not for you, you will still gain a lot from the try.

"Open Mind Open Heart" is an excellent introduction and guide to Centering Prayer. As a Christian exploring the spirituality of the East over many years, Father Keating's book was one of the influences that brought me full circle back into Christ's "little flock". The work described in this book is an endeavor for a lifetime. Christians needn't look beyond their own rich Tradition in order to find the depth that seems to be missing from their religion. It is there, and Thomas Keating among many others have done us all a service in pointing out its accessibility by means of the simple yet profound spiritual practice of Centering Prayer.
