About the Author

Jun Yan is a professor in the Department of Statistics at the University of Connecticut. He was previously an assistant professor at the University of Iowa. He received a Ph.D. in statistics from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His research interests include spatial extremes, copulas, survival analysis, estimating equations, clustered data analysis, statistical computing, and applications in public health and environment.

Dipak K. Dey is a Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor in the Department of Statistics and associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Connecticut. He is an elected fellow of the International Society for Bayesian Analysis and American Association for the Advancement of Science, an elected member of the Connecticut Academy of Arts and Sciences and International Statistical Institute, and a fellow of the American Statistical Association and Institute of Mathematical Statistics. Dr. Dey is a co-editor and co-author of several books, including the Chapman & Hall/CRC Bayesian Modeling in Bioinformatics and A First Course in Linear Model Theory. His research interests include Bayesian analysis, bioinformatics, biostatistics, computational statistics, decision theory, environmental statistics, multivariate analysis, optics, reliability and survival analysis, statistical shape analysis, and statistical genetics.

About the Author

Jim Vance is a TrainingBible coach and former professional triathlete. He trained under the guidance of the national team coaching staff at the US Olympic Training Center. He recorded two world championship titles as an amateur in XTERRA and International Triathlon Union. His range of performances also stretches to Ironman; he finished third overall at the 2006 Iron­man Florida in a time of 8:37:09, running a 2:54 mar­athon in that race.

As the founder, team director, and head swim coach of Formula Endur­ance, a USA Triathlon High Performance Team in San Diego, Jim focused on developing youth and junior elite triathletes. He is also a Level 2 and Youth & Junior Certified Coach for USA Triathlon as well as an elite coach for Training­Bible Coaching. He has coached national champions and world championship podium finishers, both amateurs and elites. Jim has twice been named the USA elite head coach at the duathlon world championships.

Jim is the author of Triathlon 2.0: Data Driven Performance Training, which teaches athletes how to use technological training tools such as power meters, GPS, and heart rate monitors for Ironman triathlon racing based on their age, gender, and goals. In 2013, Jim coedited the book Triathlon Science with best-selling endurance training author Joe Friel.

Jim holds a BS in physical and health education, K–12, from the University of Nebraska, where he ran track and cross country and won two academic scholarships. He was a schoolteacher for six years before committing to triath­lon full time in 2005. He retired from triathlon competition in 2010.

Jim currently resides in San Diego with his wife and two young sons. He coaches high school swimming at Coro­nado High School and coaches a number of beginner and aspiring elite triath­letes, runners, and cyclists. His website is CoachVance.com.

Dr. Jay E. Adams is Director of Advanced Studies and Professor of Practical Theology at Westminster Theological Seminary in Escondido, California. He received his B.A. from Johns Hopkins University, his B.D. from the Reformed Episcopal Theological Seminary, his S.T.M. from Temple University, and his Ph.D. from the University of Missouri. In addition to having served as a pastor and then a Professor of Practical Theology at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Dr. Adams has been the Dean of the Christian Counseling and Educational Foundation, Laverock, Pennsylvania, since its founding in the early 1970s. This book is simply superb!This is storytelling at its finest. The illustrations pull you deeper into the personal history of historic events, and they manage to fool your senses into believing you might actually be there. My eyes lingered on them, and I found myself flipping back to previous panels to review them for subtleties I missed the first time.I teach middle school history, and I've been yearning for a book that would dare to cover the scope and breadth of the American Civil War. The authors have written a page turning graphic novel that will appeal to all ages, and will grip even those with a brief knowledge of U.S. history.This should be on the reading list of every American history class, and in the library of every school in the country. The history is first rate.

A beautiful and affecting book. The civil war is, at least to me, deeply familiar, but this book focuses on the personal, and conveys with a painful immediacy the ways that the horror of this conflict infiltrated and transformed the day-to-day existence of our not-so-distant ancestors. I was struck as I have never been before by the degree to which the appalling, unprecedented violence of the conflict was "just around the corner" for familiar and modern-seeming Americans.

I have started using this in my US history survey class (along with our traditional textbook and primary sources) and my students LOVE it. Although it's not perfect, it's a great complement to other sources and offers a terrific way to talk about alternate ways to interpret history. In addition, my 11 and 14 year old sons have also read it and enjoyed it, so it's accessible for a broad range of ages. And, as my students note in their final papers, it's fun to read, and how often do gen ed students say that at the end of the semester?

Used this in a US History class in college. It was the most useful book we were assigned. You got the sense of the war being in a different world from our own and involving real people instead of just "big names." I didn't sell it back because it was that good!

An extraordinary history. The graphic format works very well, but this is a real history book, not just a piece of art or entertainment. The two media (text and illustration) work beautifully together to create a work much more visceral and compelling than either medium alone.

Great illustrations with well researched narrative, drawing you into the civil war beyond what our abbreviated history classes teach.

Awesome Civil War graphic novel. Kept my son interested. He prefers the Narhan Hale series of history graphic novels because there's a lot of humor but he still liked this one.
