About the Author
Dawn P. Flanagan, PhD, is Professor of Psychology at St. John’s University and Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychology at Yale Child Study Center, Yale University School of Medicine. She serves as an expert witness, learning disabilities consultant, and psychoeducational test/measurement consultant and trainer for national and international organizations. Dr. Flanagan is an author of numerous publications and best known for her development of the Cross-Battery Assessment approach and the development of an operational definition of specific learning disability. Vincent C. Alfonso, PhD, is the Dean of School of Education at Gonzaga University. He is the past president of Division 16 (School Psychology) of the American Psychological Association, fellow of Divisions 16 and 5 of the APA, and a certified school psychologist and licensed psychologist. He has been providing psychoeducational services to individuals across the lifespan for more than 20 years. He is the co-editor with Dawn Flanagan of Essentials of Specific Learning Disability Identification, and co-author of Essentials of Cross-Battery Assessment, Third Edition.

By including appendices that are available online, WISC-V is invaluable to anyone wanting to use the new assesments. My husband uses this book in his own clinical practices. He says the neuropsychological assessment along with the X-Bass system is really useful. This book is already seeing hard use from him. Flanagan and Alfonso are recognized experts in assesment. This guide gives step by step how-to on working with the WISC-V. Acknowledged as the world's most-well-known and widely-used test, this book is an invaluable tool for identifying children with intellectual disabilities and specific learning disabilities, as well as those who are gifted. It really is a must-have for anyone working with children in these arenas.
I use this as a resource when writing reports. The days of de-emphasizing the FSIQ are over, and the authors explain why quite well. Good to reference when writing up educational implications. Only 4 stars because there aren't enough illustrative case reports. Especially for cases that have clinically significant differences between subtests within indexes. They are pitching their XBASS software throughout the whole book. Demerits for that as well. I have my opinions about the utility of XBASS but this is a review for the book, so I'll stick to it. For me, it's was worth buying.
Not as useful as the previous edition, especially because you have to wade through all the stuff about the XBASS software in order to find useful tidbits here and there. I would not recommend this to anyone not planning to use the software as well.
