This book was a labor of love ... it's something I'm passionate about and a book that I really enjoyed writing. The first chapter includes Python code that everyone who uses ArcGIS should be doing - even if you don't consider yourself a programmer. Python is really that simple to learn and use and the benefit you will gain is tremendous.

Then the next chapters teach you how to write stand-alone scripts and script tools. These can be run outside ArcGIS, or included on menus and run inside ArcGIS giving you a lot of flexibility on user interaction, or even scripts that can be run unattended.

One of the coolest parts is the chapter on the ArcPy mapping module. You can control every aspect of a map layout and there's even a tutorial on building custom map books. You'll have more control and build better map books that you can using the Data Driven Pages tools in ArcMap.

I've also included TONS of hands-on tutorials and exercises because that's the best way to learn coding. The more you work with the Python scripting language, the easier it is to write more scripts. There's even some techniques I developed for making tools that can interact with your map - not typically done because scripts normally can't ask you to make selections in the map.

Chapters four and five have a very comprehensive look at Python Toolboxes and Python Add-Ins. These look very daunting when you see examples run, but I've broken each down into bite-sized chunks that are easy to understand. Follow the steps, build them piece by piece, and in the end you'll have a pretty impressive application! The data validation techniques included in the Python Toolboxes and Python Add-Ins are priceless and are a great way to steer the user to the correct processes and avoid user errors.

In addition, each tutorial has a section called "Scripting Techniques" that goes over many different techniques that are valuable to you but that I just couldn't get into the tutorials. For instance, one tutorial includes many list handling techniques that you'll practice and the Scripting Techniques sections shows many more that you may want to use in your own scripts later. There's also a Tool Index in the back that notes all the tools and topics in the book and where to find them again. This is valuable when you need to reference a tool for a custom script.

When you complete all the tutorials and exercises in this book, you can truly call yourself a Python for ArcGIS programmer!

David W. Allen is the GIS manager for the City of Euless, Texas. He has taught at Tarrant County College since 1999, where he helped found one of the first GIS degree programs in Texas and establish a state standard for GIS degree programs. This was a sweet read. Especially certain parts of the book are gold. That being said, it mirrors 'my fight your fight' by Ronda Rousey in his 'I'm really tough' personality type that I don't really buy after reading this.I think they put together some honest info about their lives and sort of made up a personality while writing the books.As an author and martial artist I really wish that the publishing companies could come to me so that I could write these books myself. The fighters lives deserve to be treated with more respect. These books are pedaled as cheap coffee table smut you would see in a pile of things purchased just for decor. When instead these biographies could be beautiful, epic recounts of modern day warriors.

This book is absolutely amazing. Its a book written by the great MMA fighter Chuck Liddell about his life. From the moment he was born and later raised by his grandfather and mother till his victorious fight he held in the UFC against Wanderlai Silva.Besides all Chuck's feedback and tips about his different MMA fights, his book gives a lot of fighting principals and lessons that any martial artist would learn from. For example, I particularly liked the part about Chuck's earlier fight in his life against a bunch of bullies in the street where he makes sure his back is against the wall so he can have all his opponents on the same side! He was able to defeat them all together.He also speaks about his training strategy before the big UFC fights, which we all can learn from and immitate.Very courageously also, Chuck shares with us his mistakes, which some led to losses, for us to learn from. He was quite honest and straight forward in his book.The book is well written and very interesting. It is divided into 47 small chapters with very exciting language and ideas, which makes reading the book quite useful and also fun.I highly recommend this book.

Not since Little Evil: One Ultimate Fighter's Rise to the Top - which chronicled the life of MMA fighter Jens Pulver - has a book been written with such lucidity and honesty about the life of an MMA fighter. This book depicts Liddell's life, from his early childhood influences to his lascivious escapades after his big wins. The book is written in a straightforward and insightful manner - it doesn't get boring or redundant. Every chapter has a little moral or lesson. In one chapter, for example, Liddell says, "to me, losing as a man is better than winning as a coward." This comment, of course, is an indirect reference to Tito Ortiz.This book is at the forefront of what appears to be a forthcoming flood of MMA biographies. It is a must read for any true MMA fan.

This book was everything the Matt Hughes effort wasn't. Liddell speaks in detail about his fights, his overall strategies, and specific tactics against particular opponents. The man comes across as likeable and intelligent. He does us a favor by sparing us stories of his childhood years, and skips right to the meat of the book.I learned a lot of interesting things; Dana White trained at the same gym as Chuck Liddell - so did the Fertitta brothers. Liddell lost his manager because of a disagreement over TUF2 - the man thought he should have been paid more money and Chuck realized this was necessary both for the sport and his recognition. The UFC launched their TUF reality show completely on their own dime and then pitched it for free to any network willing to take a chance! These are the kinds of things I really wanted an insight into and Liddell's book delivers in spades. The Matt Hughes book, in contrast, gave me nothing.I wasn't a fan of Chuck's prior to reading this novel, but I am now. It's obvious that he cares passionately about the MMA game and I hope he manages to recapture the LHW belt.

A straight-ahead MMA bio that does a terrific job describing the actual fights. Liddell is a tough guy and knows it, but his book is honest and does a great job of describing the world of MMA from one of its complete legends.

Good book. Written like the iceman speaks. Easy reading.

Great book! Chuck's life is very interesting,full of great stories and accomplishments. Easy read.

this book tells the very interesting up to this point life story of the iceman. it is funny in places and dead serious in others. as i read through it i could almost hear chuck's scratchy/gravelly voice telling the story. and whatever the future holds for him, i am sure it will be interesting enough for a sequel. great 1 day read. thanks for writing this book chuck.
